The Mercedes F1 team will have to decide whether or not to employ team orders during the Russian Grand Prix after Valtteri Bottas turned the tables on championship leader and teammate Lewis Hamilton in qualifying for the race at Sochi Autodrom.
Hamilton, who leads the championship standings by 40-points with six rounds remaining, will start from second, with title rival Sebastian Vettel lining up in the Ferrari third on the grid.
Bottas has yet to win this season and will be starting from pole for only the second time this season
Wolff acknowledged, to reporters after qualifying, that team orders in the race would be a tough ask of the Finn, “It is going to be difficult to tell him 'you are not allowed to race' after putting it on pole.”
"Lewis may have been on a mission to beat Valtteri but he didn't make Turn 7. Valtteri knows he needs to extract everything to beat Lewis. He was so pumped the adrenaline was coming out of his ears."
"We made some experiments added some stuff and took some bits off. Last year Valtteri from P3 slipstreamed them and was in the lead. You have to get a good start and get wide.
"We have a good momentum. We are looking good but every time I say that I want to cross my fingers. Momentum is important but it can change quickly."
As for the dreaded subject of team orders, Wolff gave little away, "We will have the conversation tomorrow morning and see how the race will pan out..."
