Williams have confirmed that their reserve driver Robert Kubica will be on duty in FP1, on the opening day of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend where he will replace rookie Sergey Sitrotkin in an effort to provide additional feedback for the beleaguered team.
Technical chief Paddy Lowe confirmed ahead of Barcelona, "We have Robert Kubica taking part in FP1 in place of Sergey; his first of three FP1 appearances this season. We have a busy Friday programme and it will be interesting to get Robert’s feedback on the car."
"Sergey has driven many laps on this track in pre-season testing so he won’t miss out too much. We also have two days of testing following the race with our Official Young Driver Oliver Rowland, and Robert, and we have a huge programme to fit into those two days to make progress with the development of the car."
Hence, Kubica will take part in a grand prix weekend for the first time since in eight years, he last drove at a grand prix at the 2010 season-ending Abu Dhabi GP, three months before suffering career-altering injuries in a freak rally crash in February 2011.
The Pole said earlier this year, "I will do three FP1 sessions. I will start in Barcelona, then I think Austria and then another one. "I will do some pre-season testing and in-season testing. It was important to have the chance to drive."
