Anyone who has seen Max Verstappen in action - at work, behind the scenes crunching the telemetry and away from the spotlight - knows the four-time F1 World Champion is a unique talent. His relentless focus, natural ability, and down-to-earth nature have made him the benchmark for the modern era of Formula 1.

Peter Bayer, CEO of Racing Bulls, the Red Bull junior team, recently shared his insights into Verstappen’s exceptional qualities in an interview with RacingNews365 last week. Bayer, who oversees the development programme that once nurtured Verstappen during his Toro Rosso days, offered a rare glimpse into the Dutch driver’s approach both on and off the track.
Bayer was effusive in his praise, describing Verstappen as the ultimate model for the current generation of drivers: “He was the best in karting and entered Formula 1 at just 17 years old. Max even managed to change the rules around the superlicence, which speaks volumes about his impact on the sport.”
Beyond his raw talent, Bayer highlighted Verstappen’s ability to shut out the noise and distractions that accompany the intensity of Formula 1: “He’s a brilliant driver, but what impresses me even more is his focus. Max comes to work every day in his white sneakers, blue jeans, and team shirt, yet he’s always laser-focused. He’s friendly to everyone, but there’s a level of concentration I’ve never seen in anyone else.”

Bayer: I was amazed by his performance

Reflecting on Verstappen’s 2024 season, Bayer praised his resilience in a year where the competition was tougher and the car less dominant. Verstappen secured his fourth title with a stunning victory in Las Vegas, clinching the championship two races early.
Bayer was particularly struck by Verstappen’s performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix: “During those weekends, I was amazed by his performance. I went up to him in Vegas to congratulate him, and there he was, in his sneakers and jeans, holding a beer. He just has this aura about him.”
The Red Bull junior team CEO also offered a rare perspective on Verstappen’s personality away from the paddock: “He’s genuine, funny, and very sharp-witted. Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but he’s got a great sense of humour. He’s also extremely intelligent. It’s a privilege to know someone like him.”

Verstappen the driving magician

Verstappen: Bayer: I was amazed by his performance
Bayer admitted that even as a rival team executive, Verstappen’s brilliance can be mesmerising: “When you’re on the pit wall, watching not just your own car but also Verstappen's, you can’t help but think, ‘What’s he doing now?’
"The way he drives, it’s almost like magic. There’s something special about him that makes you stop and watch, even when you’re supposed to be focused on your own team." he admitted.
Bayer’s reflections underscore the rare combination of talent, focus, and humility that define Max Verstappen. In Bayer’s eyes, Verstappen has elevated the sport in a way comparable to the greats before him—Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, and Michael Schumacher, to name a few.
As Formula 1 continues to evolve on every front, Verstappen stands out as the standard-bearer for the modern era, setting a benchmark that will inspire future generations of drivers.
The 27-year-old Dutchman begins his quest for a fifth F1 world championship title, starting at the Australian Grand Prix in early March.
