Why Christian Horner is a great fit for Ferrari if Fred Vasseur's SF-26 fails

As Ferrari enters yet another decisive phase of its rebuild, along with their Formula 1 rivals, the spotlight is brightest on Fred Vasseur to prove that his programme is finally pointing Maranello in the right direction.

Former Formula 1 driver and motorsport veteran Riccardo Patrese believes the former Red Bull boss would be an obvious asset for any top team and sees no reason Ferrari should be an exception: “Christian Horner would be great for Ferrari. He would be a very good team principal for anyone because of his experience.”

Patrese pointed to Horner’s defining strength, his ability to build the right structure and make the hard calls when required, including moving people when standards slip: “He knows how to put the right person in the right place and to choose the right person. That is the key of the best thinkers.

"Sometimes you need someone who is strong enough to make tough decisions and move people if they are not performing and make changes. Horner knows how things work, how teams operate and the things that need to be done to make the project, the programme, a winning one.”

The other advantage Patrese sees is speed of execution, because Formula 1 punishes delay more brutally than any other elite sport: “Also, it is so important not to lose too much time. If you lose time in Formula 1 you are off completely because the others get ahead and you are always behind.

"From this point of view, a person like Cristian can be very good. But here in Italy, nobody speaks about Horner and Ferrari at the moment," revealed Italy-based Patrese,

That silence only sharpens the focus on Vasseur, who is entering a season where results will define his future. Patrese made it clear that the time for distance and deflection is over and that this Ferrari car will be judged as the Frenchman's work: “Vasseur has to show that what he has been doing for the past two years will work. He has had two years to build this new programme.

"So, he cannot have any more excuses. He cannot say, ‘This has nothing to do with me now. It's not my fault.’ So, we will see if everything he did in the last two years was good or not to produce this new car.”

Patrese also framed the season as a turning point, with Ferrari risking yet another reset if the project does not deliver immediately, even if that comes with a long-term cost: “I think this season is make or break for Fred Vasseur. But that causes problems too."

Patrese warned: "If a new person comes in and has to start again, that will take years. There will not be a quick fix. It's not that it takes just six months to get to the front. It can take one or two seasons again. So, let's hope what Vasseur has done works!”

The danger, Patrese warned, is not only a poor start, but a deeper competitive slide because rivals keep developing while Ferrari would be forced to rebuild again from the ground up: “Otherwise, it's going to be a big problem not only at the beginning of this season.

"It's going to be a big problem for maybe one or two years. The other issue is that other teams will keep progressing, and if Ferrari is starting from zero again, it makes it even more difficult. Being a big fan of Ferrari, I hope that everything is going to work well," added Patrese.
