Fernando Alonso is approaching his 44th birthday, yet the two-time Formula 1 World Champion shows no signs of slowing down.

The oldest driver on the grid remains as combative as ever, continuing to bring rookie-level energy to his 22nd season at the top of the sport. And while Alonso's current deal with Aston Martin runs through to 2026, Alonso has yet to set a date for retirement.
The 2024 campaign was always going to be transitional, Alonso warned early on. From the moment the AMR25 hit the track, it showed little promise, and events have proven him right. After a dire start to the year with zero points from the first eight races, Alonso has bounced back, scoring 16 points from the last four rounds, starting in Barcelona.
He now sits 14th in the standings, with teammate Lance Stroll in 12th on 20 points. The pair have helped Aston Martin draw level with Racing Bulls for seventh in the 2025 F1 Constructors’ standings.
Despite these recent gains, podiums remain out of reach. Alonso hasn’t finished in the top five for 34 consecutive races — not since Saudi Arabia in early 2024.

It's been a two decade journey for Fernando in Formula 1

Alonso's hopes are now firmly pinned on what design guru Adrian Newey can deliver for 2026, when Aston Martin begins a new engine partnership with Honda under revised F1 regulations.
Speaking to Jugones, Alonso revealed: “I’ll make the most important decision of my career next summer, or even before.” That decision will hinge on the performance of the AMR26. If it's competitive, Alonso is likely to extend his stay in F1 through to the end of 2027 - at age 46.
At Silverstone, José Mourinho captured the essence of Alonso’s enduring appeal. “People like to talk about age or smiles. I prefer to talk about performance, quality, experience, and passion. That’s why I identify with Alonso.
"New talents come, sure, but Fernando is Fernando. He’s the driver I enjoy most. He’s in a team where it’s hard to win, but with Fernando, you always expect something special,” the former Real Madrid coach told DAZN.
Until the AMR26 hits the track, Alonso’s fans — and rivals — will be left wondering just how long the No.14 intends to keep fighting to be at the front.
