What’s going on with George Russell? 

While the pair finished the race on the podium in Barcelona, second and third place respectively, the incident has somewhat clouded a partnership between the two British drivers which had been relatively squeaky clean.

Russell began his driving career in 2012. He competed in various junior karting competitions before quickly proving that he was destined for the higher divisions of motorsport. By 2018, he had won both the 2017 GP3 Series and the 2018 Formula 2 Championship, becoming one of only three drivers to ever win both championships in their rookie seasons. Following his success, he signed a multi-year contract with Williams and made his Grand Prix debut in the 2019 Australian Grand Prix.

His relationship with Mercedes began in 2020 when Russell stood in for Hamilton in that year’s Sakhir Grand Prix after his now-teammate had tested positive for COVID-19. The incident did not deter Mercedes from offering Russell a contract and he officially joined the Mercedes team alongside Lewis Hamilton in 2022. Mercedes have enjoyed a successful Formula 1 season so far, despite Max Verstappen continuing to lead the championship. However, calls for Russell to be sacked from the Mercedes team have been met with controversy. While the manoeuvre was unsafe, it is a fairly common incident, especially during qualifying when the drivers are competing for the best grid position.

After meeting with the stewards, both Hamilton and Russell were able to compete in the race the following day, and performed brilliantly, earning the first joint British podium since 2010.

Discussions of the 2024 season of Formula 1 have already begun, with fans speculating whether Russell and Hamilton will remain as teammates or if one of them will transfer to a new team. The details of Russell’s contract with Mercedes have never been disclosed, while Hamilton is due to renew his contract at the end of the current season.
