Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari were handed a major boost with the return of Angela Cullen. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion will reunite with his long-time trainer for the 2025 season as part of his performance team at Maranello.

Cullen, who worked with Hamilton for seven years before their split in early 2023, played a key role in his physical and mental preparation during his most successful years with Mercedes. Her return has already generated significant interest, with online searches for Cullen surging by 3,800%, while Ferrari-related searches have risen by 82% over the past week.
A recent study analysing Hamilton’s performance before and after his split with Cullen suggests her presence could have a tangible impact on his results. Data shows that Hamilton scored 58% more points per season when working alongside Cullen, averaging 362.6 points compared to 199.5 without her.
Similarly, his average points per race dropped from 17.8 between 2016 and 2022 to just 10.2 since their separation at the start of 2023. The analysis also indicates that Hamilton finished two grid places higher on average with Cullen’s support, qualifying in third place compared to an average grid position of fifth without her.
With Hamilton set to embark on a new chapter at Ferrari in 2025, the return of a familiar and trusted figure could be pivotal in his pursuit of an eighth F1 world title.

Psychological Impact of Cullen’s Return

Dr Martin Turner, a sports psychologist at Manchester Metropolitan University, believes Cullen’s presence could provide Hamilton with a much-needed reset as he transitions to Ferrari.
"This could be a nice reset for him, going back to familiar territory with someone who understands him, his goals, and his needs," Dr Turner explained. "Hamilton will no doubt be able to be quite open with Cullen, which can lead to better work between them and better outcomes for Hamilton."
Dr Turner highlighted the benefits of long-term working relationships in elite sport: "Because you know the athlete well, you can have briefer and more impactful conversations. Because you have tons of previous experience with them, you know what to say and how to say things most effectively, because you already have an understanding of what works and what does not."
He also emphasised the importance of non-verbal communication in high-pressure environments: "Because you have a connection, you understand the athlete’s non-verbal cues better, which aids communication."

Maximising Performance at Ferrari

Dr Turner outlined key strategies that could help Hamilton extract the most from his partnership with Cullen at Ferrari: "The athlete gets used to what you can and cannot offer, so they can actually use the relationship better for their needs.
"Also, having a perception of high social support, which is what we offer in part, can help them manage stress better. Knowing you have someone who you can go to when things get tough can be a great pressure release valve."
However, Dr Turner cautioned against blurring the lines between professional and personal relationships, stressing the importance of maintaining clear boundaries. "Friends are friends. Coaches are coaches. They are not the same. Blurring of these lines does not allow the coach to operate properly.
"You do not talk to your friends in the same way you talk to a client. Athletes should be clear about ‘this is why I want you in my team, and this is your job,’ and coaches should be clear about this is my job, and these are my boundaries," added the Doctor.
As Hamilton prepares for his highly anticipated Ferrari debut in 2025, the return of Cullen could offer a key advantage both on and off the track. With their proven track record together, her presence may prove to be a crucial factor in his pursuit of further success in Formula 1.
