In an interview announcing that his company has no interest in entering Formula 1 in it's current state of flux, VW Group motorsport boss chief Wolfgang Durheimer also revealed that the company's World Endurance Championship (WEC) campaigns for Audi and Porsche cost more than running a F1 team.
In a surprise revelation to Autocar Durheimer said, "The technology is greater than that in F1 and the levels of investment are therefore greater."
When asked if there WEC programmes were sustainable he observed, "Probably not, but the series is in good shape. I expect that, in time, LMP1 cars will have less complex content, bringing the price down and attracting more manufacturers. But, for now, the regulations are where the competitors want them."
The VW Group have programmes in WEC with Audi and Porsche, a Volkswagen works effort in the World Rally Championship and the World Rallycross Championship and GT3 racing with Bentley and Porsche.
