James Vowles insisted he would not sugarcoat the situation at Williams in order to attract talent since that will cause a massive deficit for the team on the long term.
Vowles is in the
process of rebuilding Williams since he joined the team earlier in 2022, and that includes developing the infrastructure and hiring staff in a bid to return the team to competitiveness.
Williams have recently hired Pat Fry as Chief Technical Officer and have Alex Albon in one of their cars doing an exceptional job which makes keeping him at Grove an important factor for the team.
But the former Mercedes head of strategy insists honesty is the best was of making sure the talent that join the project - be it drivers or team staff - would stick around for the long term.
Vowles told
Motorsport.com: "Anything you do that lends them to realise that the numbers are fictitious will give you a short-term gain for a long-term massive deficit, including a loss of a driver."
"What I've done with both Pat and Alex as well, is show them why we will be moving forward on the long-term vision. The best thing you can do is ask Alex.
"But you'll find he's very comfortable with where he is at the moment because he can see we've delivered across the last six months and what the pathway is across the next few years as well," he added.
The Williams boss reckons it is better to tell drivers and staff both with the team and planning to join, what the real situation and try to make them buy into the mission, which makes sure they don't get an nasty surprises ensuring their full long term commitment.
"If you do anything else to them, all you do is at one point they'll be disrupted with 'This isn't the reality of what you promised them'," he said.
"So, this is why the whole way through I've been focusing on the long-term and a truthful analysis of the long-term, but allowing people to buy into that vision," Vowles concluded.
