Ferrari dared to dream before the summer break as Sebastian Vettel led the 2017 Formula 1 world championship standings and it appeared that the Reds had found an edge over Mercedes, but after the summer break, everything changed as Mercedes, particularly Lewis Hamilton, upped the ante and Ferrari fumbled massively and the rest (as they say) is history.
Reflecting on the season past in an interview with F1 veteran journo Dieter Rencken, Vettel said, "What we have to do is take that final step. If you look back, it's always the final step that is the hardest."
News from the F1 world might be scarce at this time of the year, but make no mistake all ten team headquarters are buzzing with activity as they prepare for the season ahead.
Vettel gave insight into what's happening at Maranello, "There's a lot of work going on and for the last couple of months focusing on next season, trying to make the car faster, with more power into the power unit, and then we'll see where we are."
"Obviously the regulations stay roughly the same. I think we have a good and healthy platform to build on at the beginning of the year so I hope we can continue."
"In the end as a driver you want to win, and obviously when you are competitive at the beginning you don't know if it will be enough to fight for the championship."
"Usually it's a no-brainer: if the car is quick and you are doing your job well then as the season progress it will lead you to good news or bad news."
Summarising his sentiments in the wake of the season past, Vettel said, "For the most of it, I think it's been good news. There were a couple of weeks that were quite painful for us, but overall it's always great if you have a package that you can take to the fight."
Big Question: Do Seb and Ferrari have the right stuff to take the final step to a title?
