Within the first three corners of Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Max Verstappen had muscled his way to the front of the field and thereafter simply cruised to victory in the Mexican Grand Prix, winning by a big margin with a great deal to spare.
Verstappen admitted afterwards, "This was one of the easiest races of my career. I was confident the car was going to be good because looking at the long run pace it was very easy for us to do quick lap times. We just needed the balance to be correct," Verstappen tells Rachel Brookes.
"The start itself was not great because I was high on the limiter but it turned out to be perfect because I had a good tow on Sebastian and went around the outside at Turn One."
"I felt I missed out [in qualifying] so I felt I had to make it right today. I was so far in front I thought 'let's cut the corner and get a five-second penalty to make it a bit more interesting'. It was a good race and after last week this was a great result.
"We are in a good way and we need to make sure we keep working this way and that we have a better start to the season next year because then I think we can achieve great things," added the Red Bull driver.
Team chief Christian Horner was clearly delighted with his driver, "Unbelievable. We couldn't slow him down. He had an unbelievable start. It's amazing how quickly he gets on the radio [to celebrate moves]."
"He dominated the Grand Prix and it was a question of slowing him down. We had two concerns, one was reliability - we kept seeing fellow cars with similar power units dropping out - and it was quite nerve-wracking that something might happen for Max but he controlled everything," added Horner.
It was Verstappen second victory of the season, the third of his career, and moves him closer to his teammate Daniel Ricciardo in the championship standings where the Dutchman is sixth on the points table.
