Reigning Formula 1 World Champion and 2024 Championship leader Max Verstappen has become the focus of intense speculation about his future, not only with his current Red Bull team but also in Formula 1.
His current winless streak is a rare and unexpected occurrence for Verstappen, who had won seven of the first ten races this year but has been winless since the
Spanush Grand Prix in June, sparking rumours about the 27-year-old Dutchman's future in the sport.
Much of the speculation, amid a high-profile brain drain at Red Bull as team boss Christian Horner battles at the helm of the team, navigating its choppiest seas in the two decades it has existed as a F1 coinstructor.
While initially dismissed by some as sensationalist, some reports are gaining traction and suggest major changes ahead for Verstappen. Here are the most talked-about possibilities:
Option 1: Verstappen to quit F1?
A popular theory, especially in the UK, suggests that Verstappen may quit F1 altogether if he secures his fourth title this season.
Verstappen is frustrated with the FIA's petty regulatory decisions, including
a recent sanction for using inappropriate language. This dissatisfaction could lead to an abrupt exit from Formula 1, with the 26-year-old potentially shifting his focus to the World Endurance Championship (WEC), where he could form his own team.
The speculation raises questions about Verstappen's tolerance for the off-track politics of Formula 1, though he will be reminded that venturing into the World Endurance Championship (WEC), which falls under the jurisdiction of the FIA headed by headline grabbing President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
To escape the FIA's control of motorsport, Verstappen would have to take his talent to the United States, where Indycar and NASCAR would no doubt gladly sign the triple F1 World Champ.
Option 2: Mercedes in the mix?
According to German sources, Verstappen's father, Jos Verstappen, has already negotiated a move to Mercedes for 2026. Rumours suggest that Mercedes, powered by new synthetic fuels, could have a significant advantage in the coming era, similar to their dominance in the 2014 hybrid era.
Under this scenario, Verstappen would replace George Russell at Mercedes, with Russell potentially being eyed by Christian Horner for a future Red Bull seat.
Toto Wolff, who openly coveted and even wooed Verstappen, described the Horner comment about Russell being an option for Red Bull's future as troublemaking. The Mercedes boss insisted he was committed to the Briton and 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli in place of Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton.
Neverthless, Wolff will most likely swoop on Verstappen if and when he becomes available. Unless, of course, big bucks Lawrence Stroll has his way.
Option 3: Follow Adrian Newey to Aston Martin?
Another potential scenario points to Verstappen having already secured a deal with Aston Martin for 2026. According to this theory, Verstappen’s discontent with Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, has grown to the point where he is ready to leave.
It's said that Verstappen has given his word to his former Red Bull colleague, Aston Martin's Adrian Newey, and that team owner Lawrence Stroll has played a key role in luring him away. This option has
reportedly unsettled Fernando Alonso, despite his extended contract with Aston Martin.
In this scenario, Verstappen would remain with Red Bull until 2025 but could trigger a performance clause to exit his contract early, which is currently set to run until 2028.
Of course, no concrete statements have been made by Verstappen or his management team. Whether these rumours prove to be true or not remains to be seen, but they are his most likely options, not withstanding a possible Option 4 in the form of a question: Will Verstappen truly leave Red Bull, or is this all just talk?
Whatever the option he chooses, Max calls the shots in the F1 driver market. He is the most exciting and in-demand driver on the planet. With that in mind, for now be sure Verstappen is fully focused on winning his
fourth F1 World Championship title. After that, he can make the calls.
