Max Verstappen warned, after his win at Spa-Francorchamps, that at some point, the utter dominance he and Red Bull are currently enjoying in Formula 1 will end, and it's important to enjoy it, while learning and improving.
The reigning F1 Champion won the
2023 Belgian Grand Prix from sixth on the grid following his gearbox penalty, and crossed the finish line over 22s clear of teammate Sergio Perez in the sister Red Bull RB 19.
It was another show of supremacy by the Dutchman who is currently enjoying a run of huge success for the second season in a row fighting for his third F1 Drivers' Crown in a row.
But after the race on Sunday at Spa-Francorchamps, the Red Bull ace said something that reminded us of what Red Bull's previous F1 Champion, Sebastian Vettel said after winning his fourth F1 Title with the team back in 2023 following a four-year dominant streak.
Vettel said at the time: "We have to remember these days. Because there's no guarantee that they'll last forever!"
And indeed that was the case, as in 2014 when Mercedes started their own dominant run following the start of the Turbo-Hybrid era, Red Bull and others playing catch up. It wasn't until 2021 that Red Bull hit back winning that year's Drivers' Title with Verstappen before starting their second dominant run in their F1 history in 2022, nailing the regulation change.
"I'm definitely enjoying the moment," Verstappen told
Sky Sports F1 after the race in Belgium, "but at the same time I know that at one point this will stop so we need to enjoy keep learning, keep trying to improve and I'm trying to implement it again for the next race.
"This keeps the fire going. If I have to rock up and I have no chance of winning then the fire starts to go away," he admitted. "It depends what we keep doing every single year but this year, it's looking great. Next year is again a completely different year."
GP and I were just having a laugh
During the race at Spa, some interesting radio messages between Verstappen and his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, the latter seemingly trying to keep his driver under control urging him to "use his head" several times and be cautious with his tyres.
At one point Verstappen cheekily suggested he builds the gap on the final stint, and go for another pit stop to give the crew some practice, to which Lambiase responded: "Not this time..."
The Red Bull ace reflected on the radio interchange with his engineer, he said in Red Bull media brief: "GP and I were just having a laugh today, we’re honest with each other and that’s how we operate, there’s no need to worry.
"The first half of the season has been much better than anyone would have ever dreamt of, how we are performing as a Team and winning so many races in a row is incredible.
"We’re definitely enjoying the moment, but we also want to keep this momentum and level for a long time, so hopefully after the summer break we’re strong again in Zandvoort," Verstappen concluded.
The double F1 Champion now heads into a deserved summer break leading the Drivers' Standings by a massive 125 points from second-placed Perez.
