Scuderia Ferrari arrive at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with an outside chance of clinching the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors' Championship, aiming to overcome a 21-point deficit to McLaren.
Team Principal Fred Vasseur remains realistic about the challenge ahead but emphasises the Ferrari’s fighting spirit: “For the first time in the hybrid era, we are in the running for the championship title at the final round.
“That in itself is a great achievement, but this weekend we will be trying to take that important final step. Let’s be honest, it is a mathematical possibility, but in reality, it will be very difficult to achieve. Even if we finish first and second, McLaren can afford to finish third and fourth—or even worse—and still have the edge,” Vasseur remarked.
Ferrari’s resurgence this season has been its strongest since the hybrid era began in 2014. Yet, Yas Marina Circuit presents a stern test. Ferrari has never won at the venue in 15 attempts, the most starts without a victory at any circuit in its history.
“But Ferrari has always liked a challenge!” Vasseur declared. “If we can once again produce a perfect weekend from start to finish, we will at least be in with a chance and be able to leave Abu Dhabi saying we gave it our best shot.”
Sainz’s Ferrari farewell and an historic first in Abu Dhabi
Ferrari is no stranger to arriving in Abu Dhabi with titles on the line. In 2010, the team contended for the Drivers’ Championship but left empty-handed. This year, however, the Constructors' title is the focus, and Ferrari aims to add to its tally of 16 championships.
The Yas Marina track underwent significant revisions before the 2021 season, making it faster and more conducive to overtaking. The lap starts with a technical first sector, but opportunities for passing arise through turns 5 and 6, leading into the 1.2-kilometre back straight with a DRS zone.
Another DRS section follows into turn 9, before drivers tackle the tight, technical final sector under the iconic hotel lights. Precision will be paramount, as mistakes at Yas Marina often invite Safety Cars or red flags.
This weekend marks the end of Carlos Sainz’s four-year tenure with Ferrari before his move to Williams in 2025. The Spaniard will be eager to close this chapter on a high, having secured four wins, six pole positions, and 24 podiums during his time with the team.
For Charles Leclerc, the weekend carries personal significance as his younger brother Arthur makes his Formula 1 debut. Arthur Leclerc will drive Sainz’s car during the first free practice session, making history as the first pair of brothers to compete on track for the same team in F1. Reflecting on this milestone, Arthur will also participate in the post-season test alongside Charles and Antonio Fuoco.
Strategy and Preparation
Ferrari’s approach to the Abu Dhabi weekend has been meticulous. Vasseur revealed: “Our preparation for this event has been thorough. We know that qualifying will play a very important role, even if our car tends to perform better in the race. Charles, Carlos, and the entire team are all set to fight tooth and nail to bring home the title.”
The Yas Marina Circuit is demanding on tyres, making strategy a crucial element. Last year’s race demonstrated that a two-stop strategy—starting on Medium tyres before switching to Hards—was optimal. The second free practice session, held under conditions similar to the race, will provide critical data for teams.
Weather conditions are expected to mirror those
in Qatar, with significant temperature drops during the night sessions. This will impact tyre behaviour, requiring strategists to adapt quickly. “Mistakes are costly here,” Vasseur warned, “because the walls are close, and a Safety Car or red flag can easily disrupt the race.”
Ferrari faces a formidable task to overcome McLaren’s advantage, but Vasseur remains resolute: “If we can at least end this season knowing we gave everything, we can carry that momentum into the next year. This team thrives on challenges, and this weekend will be no different.”
While the odds are steep, Ferrari’s determination ensures the final round of the 2024 season will be fought with grit and passion, true to the Scuderia’s storied legacy.
