Former F1 driver Jarno Trulli has ridiculed the current state of Formula 1, decrying the fact that drivers are in consumption mode for most of the race and feels for former rivals including Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.
In conversation with Leo Turrini, Trulli lamented, "What has become of Formula 1? How they have diluted it? You realise that Sunday in Singapore the drivers were running ten to twelve seconds per lap slower than the pole time. Twelve seconds slower!"
"It's absurd, it's ridiculous. I think of the dismay that Kimi and Fernando must feel, also Lewis and Seb, in short, those who raced when Formula 1 that was Formula 1."
"The essence of racing is pushing hard every lap until the finish line, but now drivers are forced to drive slower, looking after fuel consumption, saving tyres and so on. We no longer know the limit of the drivers."
"Intervention is needed and quickly or the distortion of Formula 1 risks becoming irreversible. This is very upsetting because I love this sport, it has represented so much in my life. What a shame!"
Asked about the world title fight between Vettel and championship leader Hamilton, Trulli ventured, "I will tell you this about Hamilton, he has always been strong but once in a while in the season he stumbles, but this year he never makes mistakes."
"I'm sorry to say this but so far Hamilton has been superior to Vettel and, because of that, for Ferrari the dream is fading once again," added the Italian veteran of 252 grand prix starts in a F1 career that spanned 14 seasons.
Trulli's last F1 race was at the 2011 Brazilian Grand Prix and his final major race was the London ePrix in 2015 during the inaugural Formula E season.
He is also the co-owner of Podere Castorani, a winery in his native Abruzzo where he produces his own wine.
