Lance Stroll made it into Formula 1 because money helped open doors for the teenager who throughout his junior career (from karting to F3) always enjoyed the very best of the best equipment.'
But this year the Williams he has at his disposal looks to be the worst car on the grid despite the tens of millions his father Lawrence Stroll has invested in the team.
The Canadian teenager has not been shy to verbalise his disapproval of the car and again after a woeful showing on day one of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, Stroll was not happy when he told reporters, “The car is pretty slow.”
Indeed it was, Stroll ending the day 19th albeit 3.3 seconds shy of the top time and three tenths slower than the next worst driver
Earlier in the day Williams reserve Robert Kubica told reporters the car was so difficult to drive that it was embarrassing, Stroll was asked if he agreed, “I would. It’s definitely not the balance a racing driver wants to feel."
"This afternoon we tried to sort out a few things and the car improved a little bit, but still there is so much to understand and figure out. There is a lot of work to be done tonight and we have got to understand what to do so we can be better.”
"We are where we are. We have got to understand what to do so we can be better. We are struggling everywhere and it all adds up,” explained Stroll.
Paddy Lowe and his technical team of boffins have clearly messed up their sums and delivered a lemon of a car for their young drivers to come to terms with, "Overall it was not a good day. We didn’t expect this to be a strong circuit for us, given the problems we’ve been having with the FW41 all year."
But our pace is worse than we predicted. The underlying problems are understood and will be fixed in due course. On top of that we are struggling with the supersoft tyre in particular on this track."
"Nevertheless, we made some progress between FP1 and FP2 and I’m sure we can do much more overnight to find a better balance for qualifying and the race," concluded Lowe.
