story of the decade
In a decade of so much news in and around Formula 1 choosing the biggest story is always going to be a tough ask, so our three relate to the new ownership at the helm of the sport, the extinguishing of a bright star and the emergence of a lifesaver.
Michele Lupini: Bernie Makes Way for Liberty
The changing of the F1 guard had to be the Story of the Decade - the man who shaped it quietly slipped away to allow the new guard to take over. Let’s say F1 has become a little less controversial since, but the work has not finished and we now look forward to see what the new decade delivers off that fresh new rules set starting 2021. Over to you Liberty Media.
Ben Stevens: Death of Jules Bianchi
Certainly not the 'story' you want to have happen, Jules Bianchi's passing in the wake of his accident at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix marked the first driver fatality since the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna 20 years earlier at Imola.
Despite close-calls in the intervening years like Felipe Massa's 2009 incident in Hungary, it had become easy to dismiss the very real dangers of racing in F1, before here we were provided an unfortunate reminder.
As a positive, it brought with it such safety innovations as the virtual safety car and the halo -- controversial as they may be -- and the hope that while motorsport will never be completely safe, we can avoid another death like Jules'.
Paul Velasco: The Halo
We all hated it when it broke onto the scene during the tale end of this past decade, but to me, it had a huge impact on F1 not only from an aesthetics point of view. It has gone on the save lives and for that alone the sport needed it.
Anthoine Hubert's death in the Halo era in Formula 2 is proof that motorsport is dangerous, that the Halo has done its job there is no doubt. And it was a big story to boot.
