McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella suggests that Lando Norris needs to find the right balance between being honest and too honest, as the British driver tends to be over-critical of his performance.

And those performances this year have been stellar, especially of late as McLaren find the sweetspot in their package and their drivers - Norris and Oscar Piastri - making the most of what they have, which during the Qatar Grand Prix weekend was only just second best to Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
Although only 23 years old, Norris will be competing in his 100th Grand Prix, when he lines up on the grid in Austin, next on the Formula 1 calendar and this experience shows relative to his rookie terammate, as he has scored 136 of the team's 219 points.
But, Piastri with 17 GPs on his CV is matching and beating him which comes with a foreign challenge to Norris who was always the young guy, giving it to the older guy. He finds himself in the situation Carlos Sainz was in when the two partnered at Woking in 2019 and 2020.
Stella told Formula1News: “Lando is such an honest person. He perpetuates this honesty in every kind of relationship, including the one with himself.
"Bou need to find the right balance and the right dynamics in terms of communication to the world and in terms of communication to yourself, to put yourself in the position to perform today and in the position to keep improving every day.
“So even how harsh he was on himself following, especially the qualifying on Friday will be an element of review. This review will happen, again, very honestly, and he will calibrate over time to see, do I really have to be with myself? What is the target here?"

Norris: I feel like it was a weekend of missed opportunities

The McLaren boss reacting to Norris' self-criticism after being beaten by Piastri in the Sprint Race and the Grand Prix in Qatar, the driver said of his time at Lusail: “If I want to be honest with myself, I should have fought for two pole positions this weekend, and potentially two victories.
“I know it’s a big thing to say, but I think if things went well if I just did a better job and didn’t make the mistakes I did over the last two days… This is why I’ve been so frustrated because I knew what was on the cards that we were able to potentially achieve, and that was victories.
“So I feel like it was a weekend of missed opportunities for myself to take the fight to Max and at least give yourself an opportunity. I feel like I missed out and didn’t do what I should have done and achieved what I should have achieved, but I’m definitely so happy with a P3.
“I can’t take anything away from that, but in the back of my head, I know I should have done more this weekend," added Norris.
Final word to Stella: “There’s a bit of a journey, which is for Lando, it will be for Oscar, and is for each of us in the team." And a very interesting journey for F1 fans it is already proving to be.
