McLaren have confirmed that Sergey Sirotkin will be their reserve driver this season, a role the Russian will dovetail also as Renault reserve.
Sirotkin, 23, raced for Williams last year and impressed as a rookie despite the woeful car he had to drive, but his backers had no faith in the future of the beleaguered Grove outfit and decided to remove their driver from the programme.
This year he was signed by Renault as a reserve and he has joined SMP Racing in the World Endurance Championship.
McLaren Press Release
Sergey Sirotkin will be present at every race for the remainder of the season
McLaren and Renault have reached agreement for McLaren to have access to Renault reserve driver Sergey Sirotkin should Carlos or Lando be unable to complete a full race weekend in 2019.
The agreement ensures that both parties have a reserve driver present at every race for the remainder of this season.
“This is an expedient solution for McLaren in 2019,” commented Andreas Seidl, McLaren F1 team principal. “Sergey is a known quantity, has the necessary superlicence points and is formally aligned to our engine provider, Renault, so he is the obvious candidate.”
