Logan Sargeant, Williams' rookie Formula 1 driver, pointed out that he needs to improve his pace over race runs, as he feels happy with his qualifying efforts.
The American joined F1 after finishing fourth in the overall Formula 2 standings in 2022, his best results being two feature race wins at Silverstone and Spielberg (Austria) while driving for team Rodin Carlin.
Three races from since
his F1 debut in 2023, the Williams rookie is yet to score any points finishing 12th and 16th in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia respectively. In Australia he was classified 16th and escaped a penalty for punting Nyck de Vries on the second race restart amid the mayhem that took place.
However, Sargeant is relishing his young F1 career, and asked what he enjoyed so far, he said, quoted by
F1's Official Website: "What haven’t I [enjoyed]? It’s hard to pick one; I’ve loved everything.
"I think, honestly, [it’s] just having the element of going against 19 of the best drivers in the world and really challenging myself to step up and make something happen," he explained.
Race pace needs work
Sargeant qualified 16th, 20th, and 18th in the opening three round of the 2023 F1 season, but he pointed out his Saudi Arabian qualifying efforts as a good step despite being last.
He said: "I think Saudi was a really good step forward in terms of qualifying pace from Bahrain, even though nothing came of it, but I think that was super positive.
"I feel, honestly, super comfortable in the car. I feel like I’ve got my feet under the table, but there’s still a lot to learn in the races," the 22-year-old from Florida added.
As to where he needs to improve; Sargeant said: "I’ve always been very comfortable with my qualifying pace coming from the previous series, so [I’m] just trying to get on top of the race runs."
With Williams currently having one of the slowest cars on the grid, it will always be a challenge for a rookie to deliver strong results, but George Russell did so at Williams always dragging the cars at his disposal during his time at Grove to places they shouldn't be thus highlighting his talent, and making the breakthrough into a Mercedes seat.
Can Sargeant do the same?
