The 2024 Formula 1 season roared back to life at Zandvoort with Mercedes driver George Russell setting the fastest time during Friday’s practice sessions for the Dutch Grand Prix.

The first day of running was marked by changeable weather, with wind, rain, and brief spells of sunshine impacting both sessions for Mercedes and their rivals as well.
As the action resumed post-summer break, the morning FP1 session saw challenging conditions, with full wet and intermediate tyres dominating the early part due to rain. As a dry line eventually emerged, Mercedes drivers Russell and Lewis Hamilton switched to Soft compound tyres in the closing stages, posting competitive times despite the windy conditions.
FP2 was run on a fully dry track, allowing the teams to work through their programmes more effectively. After initial laps on the Medium compound tyres, Russell went fastest of the day on the Softs, while Hamilton secured P3, underlining Mercedes’ strong race pace.

Russell: It was a tricky start

“It was good to get back in the car," Russell said afterwards. "Back into the swing of things with the first day of running here in Zandvoort. It was difficult out there due to the windy conditions. It is perhaps the windiest conditions I can remember driving an F1 car in over the past few years. Nevertheless, the car was performing really well and the updated floor we brought to Spa seemed to be working effectively.”
The battle at the front looks set to be close once again, with Russell adding: “The pack at the front seems to be quite close once again. We expect to be facing another fascinating battle across the rest of the weekend for the podium spots. That said, it could all be very different tomorrow as the conditions likely change once again. I'm excited to get back in the car tomorrow and see what we can do," added Russell.
In the other Mercedes, Hamilton, who finished just behind his teammate in P3, was similarly upbeat about the team’s performance: “Today wasn't a bad start to the weekend. Everything went well, the car was feeling alive, and we were near the front of the field on the timing screens."
The Briton revealed: "We understand our car and that is making starting each weekend on the front foot much easier. We can make small tweaks from there, rather than big changes, and that is making it much easier to find performance," explained the seven-time F1 World Champion.

Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director, Andrew Shovlin, offered insights into the team’s progress and areas for improvement: “Today was an encouraging start to the weekend. The conditions in FP1 were particularly tricky with very strong winds and heavy rain making it difficult to get a good read on the updated floor we brought to Spa. Nevertheless, what we saw looks in line with expectations, so we'll continue the weekend with that fitted to both cars.”
Shovlin also noted that while single-lap performance was promising, the team would need to focus on refining tyre management and balance during long runs. “Our long runs weren't quite as strong. We can certainly find a bit of pace with tyre management and an improved balance, but Norris looked very good this afternoon and we will need to take a step to get on his pace.”
With Mercedes showing solid form and the team optimistic about further gains, the stage is set for a competitive battle at the front as the Dutch Grand Prix weekend unfolds. As always at Zandvoort, unpredictable weather could play a key role, keeping fans and teams on edge as qualifying approaches.
This 34th edition of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort is Round 15 of the 2024 F1 World Championship. Mercedes have only one victory at the venue when Juan Manuel Fangio won for them back in 1955. (Quotes from Agnes Carlier)
