The FIA has appointed Portuguese official Rui Marques as the new Formula 1 race director, a role he will assume at next week’s Las Vegas Grand Prix thrusting him from relative obscurity into the spotlight of the man in the hottest seat in motorsport.

Marques, 51, will replace Niels Wittich, who has left the position effective immediately. In an official statement issued Tuesday, the FIA acknowledged Wittich’s contributions and said of his immediate replacement: “Rui Marques will assume the role of Race Director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
“Rui brings a wealth of experience having previously served as track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, Deputy Race Director and Race Director in various championships. Most recently, he held the position of Formula 2 and Formula 3 Race Director,” the FIA statement added.
Marques's extensive experience includes having held positions as an international commissioner and worked at the Portuguese Automobile and Karting Federation. He also has experience as assistant race director at the World Touring Car Cup and has collaborated with Eduardo Freitas at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

His appointment marks a new chapter for the FIA’s leadership structure just three races before the conclusion of this year’s Formula 1 World Championship.
Wittich’s exit follows a turbulent period for the race director role, coming after Australian Michael Masi’s controversial departure in 2021 amid the title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which saw Max Verstappen claim his first championship.
Wittich, who succeeded Masi, has been embroiled in ongoing debates over decisions made in recent Grands Prix. The FIA has attributed his departure to a pursuit of "new opportunities," though Wittich has since disputed this, stating he did not voluntarily resign.
The timing of this change is set to add a layer of scrutiny as Max Verstappen and Red Bull face off against Lando Norris and McLaren, with both the drivers' and constructors' titles potentially on the line in Las Vegas.
