Alfa Romeo are weighing up a move to Formula E according to The Race, with fellow Stellantis-owned marque Maserati also considering the switch.
The formation of Stellantis was completed recently, with the merger bringing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Groups under the same umbrella.
Alfa Romeo is currently reviewing its partnership with Sauber Formula 1 team, which is up for renewal at the end of the 2021 season.
According to
The Race, both Alfa and Maserati are putting a Formula E entry under "serious consideration", although the move remains far from being decided.
The recent arrival of former Peugeot CEO Jean-Philipe Imparato at Alfa has led to speculation among Formula E teams that the
Italian marque could be eyeing a move to the all-electric series, with Imparato a known supporter of electric motorsport.
“Asking for €200million (£175m) for a future motorsport programme is completely mad,”
he told Autocar back in 2019. “Motorsport is dead unless it’s electrified.”
With the March deadline to sign up for the first season of Gen3 approaching rapidly, Alfa or Maserati would likely have to wait until the 2023/24 season before entering the series. This gives the brands until January 2022 to decide on their future.
