Renault have yet to confirm that they have contracted Nico Hulkenberg in a three year deal to spearhead their effort starting next season, but have also not denied the possibility.
We reported last week that Hulkenberg to Renault is a done deal, and a number of other outlets have since reported the same news.
Renault F1 team chief Frederic Vasseur confirmed to French media that Hulkenberg "is one of the possibilities, but at the moment we have not decided."
But added mischievously , "If we were to put all of the drivers in the team who have been linked with us, we would call ourselves a football team rather than a formula one team."
"Hulkenberg is a possibility, as are two or three other drivers," confirmed Vasseur.
GMM quote Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley: "We would not stop Nico if he would like to go somewhere else."
Renault is the only 'works' team which has yet to confirm their driver line-up for next season and are expected to ditch both their 2016 drivers.
Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas were also on the Renault radar but have opted to remain with their current teams.
Esteban Ocon is said to have a seat with the French outfit based on a handshake between his Mercedes chief Toto Wolff and Vasseur. Others connected to the drive include Jean Eric Vergne and even Haas driver Romain Grosjean who was a Renault protege during his junior years.
