The problem with the Formula 1 is not Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton's domination - there have always been dominant teams and drivers. Ferrari and Schumacher 2000-2004 and Red Bull and Vettel 2010-2013.
The problems with Formula 1 are Bernie Ecclestone and the ridiculous frequently changing rules.
- Teams have limited tokens to develop there engines rather just allowing them to develop as much as they can.
- The fuel flow regulations have made that drivers have to lift and coast rather than drive flat out. This one to me is the biggest problem.
- The cars have been made in a way that makes overtaking almost impossible even if you have better race pace than the car ahead.
- The teams and funding. The money is not distributed evenly enough among all teams. Mercedes even though they won both Championships last year made less money than Ferrari and Redbull. Williams were far better than Ferrari and McLaren last year and made a lot less money they also announced a loss of 40 million pounds. The money distribution chart is attached bellow.
When Bernie sold the broadcast rights of F1 to Sky that was the final nail in the coffin because not all F1 races are free to watch you have pay for half of them which most of the viewers are not willing to do and with less viewers less sponsors which means less money for teams.
The big teams such as Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren are fine because of their massive corporate backing but teams such as Williams and Lotus suffer. I haven't checked the figures but I think the grand prixs shown on the bbc have more viewers than the ones on sky. Bernie and the FIA are finding that out the hard way.
If the points I stated are properly addressed F1 would be much better. As for the Mercedes domination they were not the ones who started the push for the hybrid engines that was Renault.
Now they are threatening to quit Formula 1 because of the regulations that they are most responsible for unless Mercedes is severely handicapped. What it all comes down to is if you winning you are happy if you losing you complain.
