Kimi Raikkonen will drop down five places to eleventh on the grid for the Japanese Grand Prix after he was handed a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change on his Ferrari after he crashed during FP3 on Saturday.
Around the halfway mark in the hour morning session, Raikkonen lost control at Suzuka's tricky Degner 2 corner, flew over the gravel and slammed into the tyre wall.
Inspection by his team discovered damage to the gearbox, a change required which triggered the five place grid penalty.
The Ferrari crew did well to get the Finn's car ready for qualifying in the afternoon. Raikkonen posted the sixth fastest lap time during the session which was topped by Lewis Hamilton.
Raikkonen is not the only driver compromised by grid penalties at Suzuka: McLaren's Fernando Alonso has a 35 grid place drop, while Renault's Jolyon Palmer has a 20-place drop, Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz has a 20-place drop and Mercedes driver Valterri Bottas, who qualified second, will drop five places.
