For a driver with 67 Formula 1 starts and a victory to his name, Pierre Gasly committed a rookie error lining up for the start of the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix out of position and paid the price.

It was clear that Gasly's Alpha Tauri's front wheels were several centimetres or so in front of the 12th place grid spot line at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday.
For the transgression, Gasly was handed a five seconds stop and go penalty during the race and explained afterwards: “Every time I try to gain every millimetre I can but this time I just misjudged and went too far.
"I’m really upset with myself for the penalty for the start because it was really a silly penalty and I just misjudged the position. I always try to gain everything I can, every millimetre possible, but this one I just went too far, and I paid a pretty big price.
“Because five seconds, knowing that we finished just a tenth behind Ocon for P9, I obviously lost the point, and it pisses me off but it’s like this.”
While the Honda-powered Red Bull junior team was out of sorts in Spain this weekend, however during the race, after his pitstop for Pirelli softs after 28 laps on the mediums and carved his way through the field to turn 12th on Saturday to ninth on Sunday, but the five seconds demoted him to tenth at the very end.
Gasly continued: “The last stint was quite good, overtaking and really positive, but on the other hand we don’t have the performance that we would like so we need to work to find more.”
"P9 is objectively the position where we should have finished. I think overall the performance is not where we want it to be. We’re clearly not in the fight with McLaren nor Ferrari and we dropped back in the order. I think there is some potential, but we seem to have lost it slightly in the last two races.
“We finished two-tenths behind Ocon. I know it cost us a point and I’m not pleased with myself except that the last stint was quite exciting; I gave everything, and it was a pretty good one," added Gasly.
Formula 1 heads to Monaco for the most famous Grand Prix of them all in a couple of Sunday's time, all but a home race for Gasly in which he finished fifth last year hoping to be at the sharper end of proceedings than he was this past Sunday in Spain.
