Oscar Piastri revealed his self-confidence within McLaren has increased with experience as he is now able to push for what he needs from the team regarding his car.
Piastri is now gearing up for his third season with McLaren and he is now far from being the rookie that joined the team in 2023.
Since joining McLaren, Piastri has already bagged his first
Formula 1 career win in the
2024 Hungarian Grand Prix as well as his second in Azerbaijan. In 2024, he has also played a role in helping his team win their first constructors' championship since 1998.
Speaking in the interview with
Motorsport.com, the Australian driver touched on how and if his approach in pushing the team changed.
He explained: "I would say not in my demeanor or the way I'm working with the team. Maybe I know a little bit more of what I want from the team or from the car, but I think for the large part it's very, very similar.
"I'm certainly not now in my second year telling the aerodynamicists how to design the car and stuff like that. I'm still trying to give the same helpful feedback where I can.
"Maybe now that I know some more people, I'm not as afraid to be a bit more pushy in what I ask for," he pointed out. "But I have certainly not changed my personality from year to year.
"That just comes with experience, and the best way I can help is by trying to do my best every weekend," Piastri maintained.
Piastri also touched on his relationship with teammate Lando Norris, which was in the spotlight in the 2024 F1 season as the latter was fighting for the championship as McLaren took their time before asking the former to support his teammate, which was a bit too late despite the fact that beating Max Verstappen would have been a long shot.
Piastri has no complaints about his working relationship with his teammate. He said: "I think part of why we've had so much success in going forward is that Lando and I work very well together on that kind of thing. We have always wanted very similar things from the car. So I think that's very useful for the team.
"As long as we keep saying the same things then, while it means that we're still not on top of them, [it] also [means] that we're still working very much in the same wavelength," Piastri concluded.
Piastri and Norris are both expected to be contenders for the F1 title in 2025, which will put more pressure on McLaren to properly manage their relationship.
