Oscar Piastri will not take part in his home race, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix after crashing his McLaren on his way to the grid.
The Aussie, coming out of Turn 4, took a bit of kerb but then his car inexplicably spun around and he ended up in the barriers.
Piastri qualified fifth for the race on Saturday and was hoping to make it to the podium in front of his home fans.
McLaren have not been having a decent weekend so far as they seemed to be the third or fourth fastest team, competing for that position with Ferrari as Mercedes are clearly ahead while Red Bull are second.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown commented on Piastri's crash saying: “We’ve not seen anything on the data so far. He didn’t say anything on the radio, so we’ll do a post-mortem after the race and see what happened.
“For now, we’ve got to focus on the car we have in the race and get the excitement level back up, because that’s definitely disappointing for Oscar at his home race.
“I’m sure he’ll be sore about that one for a while but these race car drivers know how to recovery quickly. Definitely not the way you want to get started, but he’ll be back," the American concluded.
It is still unclear whether Piastri's crash was a driver error or something related to the car's recharge settings.
Four-time
Formula 1 Champion, Max Verstappen, also suffered from a bizarre crash during Q1 in Qualifying where his car snapped violently and sent him into the gravel trap and he couldn't get back on track.
All McLaren's hopes of a decent result in Melbourne are pinned on Lando Norris who will start the race from sixth after struggling in qualifying and expressing
his discontent with the cars.
