There’s no doubt that the 2025 Formula 1 campaign lacks the raw excitement and unpredictability of last season. But that could change in the second half of this season.

After all, just two drivers remain in realistic contention for the Drivers’ Championship, while McLaren are a staggering 299 points clear of Ferrari in the race for the constructors’ title. However, just nine points now separate McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen trailing some 88 points in third.
So, the two McLaren teammates are poised for a straight shootout during the final 10 races of the season. Leader Piastri remains the odds-on favourite at the time of writing, but does he have the experience or composure to fend off his more seasoned rival?
When betting online on the F1 Drivers’ Championship today, you’ll see that Piastri can be backed to maintain his lead and win the title at odds of 4/7. If you're unfamiliar with sport betting tips, these odds essentially imply a 63.6% probability of the Australian emerging victorious. Then, second-place Norris can be backed at 13/10, so he retains a 43.5% chance of success.

Norris vs Piastri: How Did We Get Here?

These two drivers have certainly become more dominant as the season has progressed. Not only have they won 11 of the 14 races hosted so far (78.5%), but the pair have also recorded one-two finishes in the last four Grand Prixs.
However, Norris has won three of the last four races since Canada on June 15th, including a measured and nerveless Hungaroring victory last time out. Here, he edged out Piastri by just +0.698 seconds to close the gap on his rival, despite only finishing third and behind the Australian during qualification.
Clearly, Norris has the momentum as we head into F1’s summer break. However, Piastri remains incredibly consistent and retains a crucial lead ahead of the run-in.
In addition to Norris’s recent form, the Brit is significantly more experienced than his teammate. He has made 142 career starts to date, recording nine victories for a win-rate of 6.33%. He has also achieved 38 podium finishes (26.7%).
Although Piastri has a superior win-rate with eight victories from 60 starts (13.33%), this is only the Aussie’s third season. Piastri has also recorded 22 podium finishes to date (36.6%).

May the best man win!

What’s more, 2024 saw Norris finish ahead of Piastri at seven of the 10 circuits that they’re yet to visit this year. These include victories for the Brit in Singapore and Abu Dhabi, while Norris also won the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix (the Circuit Zandvoort will host the first race after this season’s summer break on August 31st).
A win in the Netherlands could see Norris retake the lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, and there’s no doubt that he has a slight edge over Piastri as the season draws to a close.
The fight for the 2025 drivers' title is certainly difficult to call, while the dominance of McLaren means that it’s also likely to go down to the wire.
The increased tension between Norris and Piastri could also play a role in the final outcome, though McLaren have been quick to play this down after the two collided during the Canadian Grand Prix.
What's for sure is both drivers will have to maintain their composure going forward if they’re to win the Drivers’ Championship.
