Lando Norris expressed delight in securing pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as his teammate Oscar Piastri locked out the front row.
Norris' Drivers' Title battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen is already over, as the latter
claimed his fourth consecutive Championship after the Las Vegas Grand Prix. However, the Constructors' Championship is still up for grabs by two different teams.
McLaren lead rivals Ferrari by 21 points; with a maximum of 44 points on offer the order at the very top of the Standings can still change heading into the final race of the 2024 campaign.
While Ferrari have looked quick around the Yas Marina Circuit, they have also suffered several setbacks over the course of the weekend so far. Charles Leclerc has received a
ten-place grid penalty as his SF-24 required a replacement battery before FP1, while both he and teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. needed new skid blocks after running their cars too low during the final practice session.
To compound the Italian outfit's issues,
Leclerc failed to make it into Q3 after having his best time deleted for a track limits violation at Turn 1. This means the Monegasque will start Sunday's race from 20th and last on the grid.
Qualifying went much better for McLaren.
Norris beat Piastri to pole by over two tenths of a second, locking out the front row of the grid. With the other Ferrari of Sainz on the second row, McLaren are well placed to secure their first Constructors' Title since 1998.
We will remain focussed
In a
report published by McLaren following Qualifying, Norris was happy with his and the team's performance. He said: "A very good day for the team. We were quick all the way through Practice, but Qualifying was a little bit trickier than we had hoped.
"My final Q3 lap was strong, and we can be very pleased to have both cars on the front row," stated the British-Belgian.
Norris added that he will need to keep a cool head in the race to help McLaren to a historic Title: "The team has done an incredible job so far this weekend, but we will remain focused going into tomorrow’s race."
Piastri echoed his teammate's statements, stressing that he still needs to bring his car home in a good position on Sunday. The Australian said: "A front-row lockout is a great result for the team. The job is absolutely not done but it’s good to go into tomorrow in a strong position.
"After my lap was deleted and then reinstated, I gave Turn 1 more space than I should have, so I lost a little bit of time there on the final run but we’re still in a great place. We just need to keep our heads down now and not lose focus. There is still a lot to do tomorrow," concluded Piastri.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix commences Sunday 8 December at 13:00 GMT (17:00 local time). Which team will win the Constructors' Championship?
