Lando Norris claimed victory in Saturday’s sprint race at Interlagos after McLaren issued a team order for Oscar Piastri to let his teammate pass, securing the Briton an additional two points in his pursuit of Max Verstappen’s 2024 Formula 1 world championship lead.

Thanks to his teammate Piastri, Norris now trails Verstappen by 44 points, with the Grand Prix on Sunday still to come, plus another three rounds, including another sprint.
Starting from pole position, Piastri initially held his position and managed to fend off Norris through the opening corner. As the laps progressed, McLaren’s strategy discussions intensified, with the team deciding when to facilitate Norris’s pass to maximize points for both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships. The call came on lap 22 of the 24-lap sprint, with Piastri moving aside on the fourth corner to give Norris the lead.
Reflecting on the circumstances of his win, Norris acknowledged: “I am not proud of it. Oscar deserved it (the win) but we did what we had to do, so I thank him and the team. We are fighting for the constructors’ championship, and fighting for the drivers’ championship. And we want to help the team achieve both of those goals.”

Piastri: It is not as fun as winning

The team’s timing was accelerated by an impending Virtual Safety Car (VSC), set to deploy after Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas suffered a mechanical failure. McLaren’s priority to swap positions before the VSC was crucial, as it would have prevented overtaking under neutralized conditions.
Piastri, who qualified in front of Norris by a narrow 0.029-second margin, expressed understanding over the decision: “It is not as fun as winning but I know the position we are in. We have been talking about this for months and this is the first time we have had to enforce it. I would have preferred to have won but it is a sprint race, and I don’t have much to fight for in the drivers’ standings.”
Despite the internal team maneuvering, McLaren also had to contend with Verstappen, who charged past Charles Leclerc for third and attempted a late pass on Piastri. The Australian held his ground, though Verstappen now faces a stewards’ investigation for a potential infraction under the VSC.
Already set to serve a five-place grid penalty in Sunday’s main race due to a new combustion engine installation, Verstappen’s actions under the VSC could carry further implications.
