Several Formula 2 teams and their drivers have a massive repair bill after the top two on the grid shunted into the Saint Devote barriers moments after the lights went out to start the feature race today.
The FIA Formula 2 feature race in Monte Carlo was red-flagged on Sunday morning after a major first-lap incident triggered a multi-car pile-up involving 11 drivers.
The chaos unfolded at Sainte Devote, just hours before the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, after a collision between Alex Dunne and Victor Martins at Turn 1.
Starting from pole, McLaren junior Dunne got a poor getaway and was challenged into the first corner by Martins. As the pair approached the narrow entry to Sainte Devote, Dunne’s front-left made contact with the ART driver’s right-hand sidepod, sending both cars into the barriers and triggering a chain reaction behind.
The blocked circuit left several cars with nowhere to go. Dutch driver Richard Verschoor was among those forced to retire with suspension damage after clipping another car in the melee.
With 11 drivers caught up in the wreckage and debris strewn across the track, officials red-flagged the race to allow recovery and repair work to begin.
Although no injuries were reported, tensions flared over team radio in the immediate aftermath. Martins, visibly angry, was heard saying: “Who does he think he is, Max Verstappen?”
Italian driver Leonardo Fornaroli, who managed to steer clear of the incident, was set to lead the significantly reduced field when the race resumed.
Race stewards worked swiftly to clear the Monaco circuit in time for the event to continue under revised conditions.
