Michael Schumacher’s legend is still top of mind ten years on... It was one of those days. Where were you, today ten years ago? Of course, that was the day Michael Schumacher had his holiday skiing accident that changed everything.
Now you probably remember exactly where you were, don’t you? As you recall where you were when Lady Di died. Or if you’re old enough, when Kennedy was shot.
Tragic days you remember. There are a few days like that. When you remember where you were because of a tragic moment. Formula 1, by its nature, was full of them. Musso, Clark, Rindt, Villeneuve. Senna. Bianchi. It’s happened less and less, thank goodness. Which made the great Michael Schumacher’s post-race career accident all the more poignant.
An enigma, Michael brought so much to the sport. Offset by a handful of actions that, let’s say, rounded his character! Damon & Jacques, Monaco qualigate. No matter. Those of us who lived the red tide will far sooner cherish those five glorious dominant years forever. Still have the caps, the flags, the T-shirt, thank you very much!
Suppose then that this past decade of secrecy has been correct. Let us cherish the Great Schumacher for what he was at the zenith of an incredible driving career. Unimpeachable. Unwavering. Meticulous. Head and shoulders above his generation. Nothing unique about that, there have been a few since.
But Michael will always stand out. He was the one who brought Ferrari back a quarter century later. Something nobody’s managed since. Brought
pride to his team, us the Tifosi, a nation, a generation. How I will always remember him. No matter what today’s decade represents, I will always remember The Great Schumacher at his zenith. Our Legend.
