Oscar Piastri is on a roll! His victory in Miami today is his third Grand Prix win in a row, turning the tables on teammate Lando Norris - Sprint Race winner on Saturday - on a weekend that revealed just how dominant McLaren's car is at this stage of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship.
In what was a tense and incident-filled race with three VSC periods, with rain that threatened but never arrived on Sunday, with over 100,000 fans packed into the track around the Miami Dolphins stadium, Piastri took the win, followed by Norris and Mercedes driver George Russell claiming the final podium spot.
Pole winner and early race leader, Max Verstappen, was P4 in the Red Bull.
Norris (starting from P2 on the grid) lost the race at Turn 1 when he ran out of track as Max Verstappen, starting from pole, muscled the McLaren wide as they braked for the first corner. Norris dropped to P6, while Verstappen led and Piastri moved up to P2. The pair proceeded to pull ahead. Verstappen, at his best in the Red Bull, was ultimately no match for the McLarens, which—as the headline says—were on another planet.
Verstappen was typically feisty in battle, somehow managing to keep Piastri at bay. But on lap 13, the McLaren took the lead, pulled away, and stayed there until the end, controlling the race from that point onwards.
Meanwhile, Norris recovered well after fluffing his lines at the start and was tucked under Verstappen's wing shortly after, where he remained, proving as stubborn to pass as ever. By lap 18, Norris found a way past, but Piastri was nearly ten seconds up the road.
The second McLaren chased hard, but the winner had it all sorted to take a third victory in succession—the sixth of Piastri's career, now one more than teammate Norris.
The McLaren pair were made to work hard by Verstappen
The four-time F1 World Champion never gives up, even if driving a wheelbarrow. But he simply didn’t have the firepower to back up his genius and alien talent on the day.
When the chequered flag ended the race, the reality was harsh for McLaren’s rivals. Piastri crossed the line P1, 4.6 seconds ahead of P2 Norris, and a massive 37.6 seconds clear of George Russell in P3 for Mercedes. It was a trouncing by Zak Brown's team.
Piastri reported after a jiving to his mechanics in parc fermé: "Yesterday was a tricky day. Qualifying was one of my trickiest sessions of the year, so to come away and win is an impressive result. A bit of argy-bargy at Turn 1 helped me a bit. I was aware enough to avoid Max coming through in Turn 1. From that point onwards, I knew I had a good pace advantage, and clearly the car was unbelievable."
Of his race, Norris said: "It's never the best feeling but the team have done an amazing job, so I can't fault them at all. Good pit stops, great pace, we were up the road. It was a good feeling but Oscar drove well. Max put up a good fight as always, and I paid the price, but it's the way it is. What can I say? If I don't go for it, people complain. If I go for it, people complain, so you can't win."
For Russell, the final step of the podium was a welcome surprise on a weekend he lacked the Qualifying pace of his precocious rookie teammate. A wake-up call for the Englishman, who delivered when it mattered in the race, aided by the timing of the VSC for his pitstop.
Russell surprised and happy with P3
Russell reported: "Really happy to come away with P3. I've been struggling this weekend personally, and always on the back foot. Ultimately, when it mattered, I got a really good result. Well done to the McLarens. They are just down the road."
Antonelli, in the other Mercedes, delivered an impeccable weekend. Again, outshining his fellow rookies, keeping Merc teammate Russell honest and on his toes, to finish P6 on a weekend that he further entrenched himself in F1 with aplomb. The Kid is a diamond, little shining here and there required but this one is going to shine bright.
Verstappen followed the Mercedes home to claim p4, ahead of Alex Albon, who defied team orders, overtook teammate Carlos Sainz, pulled away once past and was upwardly mobile thereafter to bag points for P5. The Spaniard was in many battles, involved in an intriguing and almost vicious slugfest with his Ferrari replacement, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in the other Red Car, during the course of the race.
Ferrari! Again, they will grab headlines for all the wrong reasons. First, where has the performance gone? And second, Hamilton's frustrated radio chatter was piquant as the Italian team dithered when Lewis, on Medium Pirelli tyres hooked onto the back of Charles, his car shod with the Hard tyres.
Hamilton-Leclerc-Ferrari Radio
Hamilton: "I'm just burning up my tyres behind him. You want me to just sit here the whole race?"
Engineer: "We want to keep the DRS to Charles – go ahead like this."
Hamilton: "Man, you guys! This is not good teamwork. That's all I'm going to say!"
Hamilton: "In Chin,a I got out of the way when you were on a different strategy. Have a tea break while you're at it, come on!"
Leclerc: "I need Lewis to go faster, I've just got dirty air now."
In the end, Leclerc got by to claim P7 with Hamilton P8, on what was a hugely underwhelming race weekend for Fred Vasseur's Scuderia. Notably, Leclerc was 57 seconds adrift of the race winner when he crossed the finish line.
Their former driver, Sainz in the Williams, did not make life easy for the Ferrari duo, but could not keep them at bay. He settled for P9. He beat Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda, who claimed the final point for his P10 effort, albeit over half a minute adrift of his teammate Verstappen.
Out of the points, the Aston Martins looked pathetic. Fernando Alonso spun, but even that was not enough for Lance Stroll to beat his teammate. The pair were the last of the classified runners, lapped by the leaders and well off the pace.
Doohan cannot catch a break
Four retirements during the course of the race included hapless Jack Doohan who was smacked hard by a hapless and increasingly hopeless Liam Lawson. They, as well as Oliver Bearman (Haas) and Gabriele Bortoleto (Sauber), DNFed on not such a good day for rookies other than Antonelli amd Isack Hadjar to a lesser extent.
The Frenchman in P11 did not score points, but again easily bettered teammate Lawson and was only 0.168s shy of Tsunoda.
McLaren now lead the
2025 Formula 1 Constructors Championship by 106 points over Mercedes after Round 6, while Piastri leads the Drivers' standings by 16 points over Norris, with Verstappen 32 points off top spot in P3.
Final word to the winning team principal, Andrea Stella: "It's quite a margin. It proves the car is very competitive today. Well done for Oscar and Lando for exploiting the performance we had available in the car.
"In hot conditions, it looks like our race pace is very strong. Well done to the team who have designed, produced and delivered this formidable car. Great result. A full points haul in Miami. We keep going, keep building and it was a very positive day," added the McLaren boss.

Like I was completely alongside?"
Virtual Safety car ends
Lap 4/57: We're back to racing after Doohan's Alpine was cleared from the side of the track.
Max Verstappen sets about opening a lead over Kimi Antonelli, while Lando Norris will hope to start making up lost ground from sixth behind Alex Albon.

Like with Oscar Piastri, Verstappen positioned his Red Bull on the inside but this time was able to make it stick ahead of the challenging McLaren, with Norris losing momentum on the outside.
But, on this evidence, Max's stay in second place may not last long either.
Norris stays behind Verstappen

Lap 26/57: Lando Norris is told about "possible rain" at Turn 17 over the next couple of laps...
Antonelli into the pits from fourth
Lap 26/57: Running within two seconds of Max Verstappen in third, Mercedes attempt an undercut by bringing Kimi Antonelli in to change tyres. But it hasn’t gone to plan as the Mercedes crew had to hold the car slightly longer due to an oncoming Williams of Carlos Sainz – stop time was 4.4s.
Verstappen pits!
Lap 27/57: Red Bull respond to cover off the undercut threat from Antonelli by pitting Verstappen from third.

It’s not slowing him down though – he’s within DRS range of Hamilton in the fight for seventh.

It’s pretty close, but I suspect Oscar is managing a bit."

Norris is now 3.5s behind Piastri. He’s giving it everything but may run out of laps.
