Formula 1 race fans are descending upon Melbourne with festivities surrounding the 2024 Australian Grand Prix set to kick off this weekend.
In addition to the action-packed F1 racing, there will be a huge entertainment lineup featuring well-known Australian musical acts to help heighten the excitement of racing fans in the lead-up to, during and after the big race in Melbourne.
A Look Back at Last Year's Australian Grand Prix
Last year's Aussie GP was historically chaotic and is perhaps best remembered as a red flag affair. Three red flags were waved throughout the race, while a lengthy delay as race officials deliberated on penalties and the best course of action had fans, drivers and their teams impatiently awaiting an announcement and restart.
Alex Albon triggered the first red flag period on lap nine after a big hit around Turn 6/7 saw gravel and debris on the track and ended with George Russell's car catching fire. With only a few laps remaining, a late red flag was triggered after Kevin Magnussen ran wide out of Turn 2, glanced the wall and lost his right rear tire.
The rim came to a rest on the track as Magnussen brought the vehicle to a controlled halt, but the FIA observed enough debris to render a full safety car insufficient.
The Haas driver was disappointed to earn a DNF and was surprised his accident happened in the first place. “I didn’t even feel it, so it definitely wasn’t something that felt big in the car, but it was enough to crack the rim and take the tire off,” Magnussen explained, as per the official Formula 1 website.
Hamilton versus Verstappen rebooted
This set up a two-lap showdown for Aussie GP immortality between
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Absolute mayhem, however, unfolded at the restart. There was contact on the grid between several of Magnussen's colleagues which prompted even more damage and a third red flag stoppage of the race – a Formula 1 first – before the race concluded in yellow flag conditions.
Here's what the winner had to say following the topsy-turvy finish: “I’m very happy to win the race, but I think the race itself towards the end was a bit of a mess with all the calls. I don’t think we needed that second red flag," Verstappen said. "I think that could have been done with a virtual safety car or a safety car at worst. It left a lot of drivers confused. Today was quite messy."
Drivers and fans will hope for a more run-of-the-mill finish this go-round in Melbourne. Verstappen, for his part, will try to make it three victories in a row, proving that he is indeed 'on another planet'. Last year's winner is the favorite to repeat as champion with -550 odds.
