Lost amid almost constant headlines surrounding the dramatic changes in management at McLaren this past week is the fact that the Woking outfit are putting up for sale the iconic Formula 1 cars that made them the most successful team in the history of the sport.
In the most
recent McLaren Group annual report the team informs shareholders:
"Over the past 50 years, as a result of our racing pragramme, the Group has established a large collection of heritage race cars and other vehicles which chronicle our racing history and have been used to serve as promotional vehicles for the brand within the McLaren Technology Centre ("MTC") and also at museums, dealerships and heritage track days around the world.
"Each year, three vehicles are typically added to this collection which are the cars that have run in that season's Formula 1 World Championship. As at 31 December 2017 the collection numbered some 180 vehicles which were held at a deemed cost of £75.2-million, of which £19-million were held in inventory.
"Managing such a large collection takes significant resource and during 2017 Executive management of the Group made the decision to establish a programme to sell a specific and limited number of these cars to specialist collectors from around the world.
"Deposits have been received for the cars identified for sale and, whilst a small number were delivered in 2017, the majority will be prepared and delivered over 2018 and 2019."
The buyers. which cars are being sold and what they are selling for have not been made public.
McLaren badged cars have won 182 grands prix and their drivers have celebrated on the podium 485 times while winning eight drivers titles and 12 constructors' titles during the course of their illustrious history.
McLaren drivers included world champions: Emerson Fittipaldi (1974), James Hunt (1976), Niki Lauda (1984), Alain Prost (1985, 1986, 1989), Ayrton Senna (1988, 1990, 1991), Mika Häkkinen (1998, 1999)
and Lewis Hamilton (2008).
Team chief Zak Brown has an extensive, and impressive, range of race cars in his collection including Mika Hakkinen's 2001 McLaren MP4-16A.
