McLaren, ahead of the launch of the their 2023 Formula 1 car on February 13, announced the name it will carry, which celebrates the team's 60th year of existence.
The team's 2022 F1 racer was named the MCL36, which implied that the 2023 F1 machine from Woking should carry the MCL37 moniker.
But McLaren, celebrating the team 60th anniversary, decided to name their 2023 challenger, the MCL60.
The team have announced "McLaren60" on the eve of the 2023 F1 season, which they called as their "origin story", as the team was founded in 1963 by the late Bruce McLaren.
The team enters the upcoming F1 season under new leadership with
Andrea Stella as Team Principal, replacing Andreas Seidl, now CEO of Sauber group. They also have a revised driver lineup with Oscar Piastri replacing Daniel Ricciardo alongside Lando Norris.
One can only hope the MCL60 lives up to its name and delivers a season worthy of McLaren's 60-year-illustrious history.
Team Statement
McLaren60 is our origin story
This is our 60th year, but our story began well before then. The team may have started in 1963, but it became what it was because of who Bruce was: a true racer's racer. Every success we’ve had since - every high, every low, every comeback, has been imprinted with that DNA.
The journey we are on today is a consequence of the foundations he laid, physically, but more importantly, psychologically. "The first essential is enthusiasm,’ he so famously said. "Not just mild, but burning enthusiasm."
Most of you will know us by our Formula 1 team, but possibly only because of our more modern history - our dynamic young partnership of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Daniel Ricciardo's Italian Grand Prix victory in 2021, and our most recent title success, Lewis Hamilton in 2008, the first Black F1 World Champion.
If your knowledge stretches further back, you’ll remember the legendary rivalry between two-time title winner Mika Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher, or the even more legendary rivalry of teammates Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, who won a combined six titles.
Or maybe you remember every single one of our 183 race wins, 12 Drivers' Championships and eight Constructors' Championships, right back to the beginnings of the team and our very first F1 race in 1966.
Whatever your familiarity, you're one of us. Whatever your knowledge, however much or however little you know, we're here to tell you stories that you've never heard before. That is what McLaren60 is all about.
But it isn't about F1 alone, it goes beyond that
We dominated Can-Am at a time when it was the world's most enthralling race series, and we're the only team to have won motorsport's Triple Crown: the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Not content with conquering the racing world alone, Bruce created the safest, wildest road car ever seen, the M6GT. It served as the basis of not only our Le Mans winning car, but the greatest supercar of all time, the McLaren F1, and every model we've created since.
That barely scratches the surface. We're a team of history-makers, pioneers, and mavericks
Throughout the next 12 months, we'll be walking you through the seven eras of our journey, from the foundations that Bruce laid, starting a Formula 1 team at just 25-years-old, with a crew who were even younger, to how that team overcame his tragic death and used it to forge an outfit who would go on to enjoy a period of unprecedented triumph against all odds. From an unfancied underdog to the many peaks and troughs across the decades, our team’s history continues to shape us in many ways.
McLaren60 is about belonging, it's about battling adversity, and revelling in the risk, reward and rivalries within our sport, the success, the heartbreak, the failure and doing whatever it takes to be the most successful motor racing outfit we can be. It's a story for racing fans – it all began with our absolute love of racing, and that remains true to this day and beyond.
This isn't a look back over the good old times, it's an illustration of our purpose, because our past isn't just our history, it's what continues to drive us and shapes our future. We're still inspired by Bruce and by every driver and teammate who followed him, and as we write the next chapter, they'll be at the very heart of it.
Our story is truly unique, and we can't wait to share it with you in new ways.
