Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle reflected on Lewis Hamilton's dire situation at Ferrari, questioning how long the Briton will put up with it.
Hamilton made headlines over the weekend of the
Hungarian Grand Prix, labeling himself useless after qualifying 12th, suggesting Ferrari should replace him, while teammate Charles Leclerc qualified on pole.
During the race, the seven-time F1 champion could not make any progress and finished where he started, in 12th, cutting a miserable figure after that as Brundle pointed out that "he sat in the car in parc ferme post-race for what seemed an age, was very downbeat in interviews again".
In his post-Hungary column for
Sky Sports F1, Brundle reflected on the race as a whole and admitted he was "not looking forward to writing" the section of it about Hamilton.
He added: "Lewis Hamilton endured what must have been one of the worst weekends of his career, in and out of the car.
Some of Hamilton's post Hungary statement were best left unsaid
"He struggled for ultimate pace in qualifying, and with the pack so close he would start only 12th when his team-mate Leclerc was on pole.
"He would then describe himself as 'useless' in post-qualifying interviews and suggest the team should change the driver. That was best left unsaid, but he obviously wanted to openly punish himself.
"He's clearly in a difficult place personally," Brundle, a veteran of 158 Grands Prix over a career that spanned 12 F1 seasons, pointed out.
With speculation surrounding his future, Hamilton said that he is
hoping he will come back stronger after the summer break, while Brundle commented: "The summer break couldn't be more timely for Lewis to have a reset.
"It's painful to observe this great champion in so much strife, and we have to expect that he can weather the storm and return to form given his talent and experience.
"Otherwise I simply can't see him enduring two more seasons at Ferrari, or anywhere else, like this," Brundle predicted in conclusion.
Big Question: Can Lewis Hamilton recover from his tough Ferrari situation?
