Haas' Kevin Magnussen has hit-out at several Formula 1 drivers after their failure to respect yellow flag conditions cost saw him eliminated in Q1 for the Turkish Grand Prix on Saturday.
Seemingly in contention to make Q2, Magnussen was on a flying lap in the final minutes of Q1 when spins for Williams' Nicholas Latifi and AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat brought out double-waved yellows, causing the Dane to abandon his run.
However, several drivers set improved times under the yellow flags, and while Lando Norris and George Russell were handed five-second penalties after qualifying was over, Magnussen insists it should have been dealt with as it happened.
“I backed off, and nobody else did,” he said. “The track was better so you were going to improve, but there was a double yellow flag. The rules say you have to abort the lap, nobody did… I was P7 and I got knocked out, so clearly, nobody gave an eff.
“They don’t look at it in-session, so now I’m knocked out. I’m not running now because people don’t respect the rules… and I should be running now. I was P7 and I didn’t push because there was a yellow flag. Clearly the track improved and I’m pissed off."
Additionally, Magnussen suggested the stewards handling the infractions in such a manner only encouraged such further unsafe driving in the future.
“They have to do it in the session and delete those lap times because now I’m out," he explained. "If this is normal, then I can’t justify backing off. I’d rather get through then get a penalty after so it’s dangerous.”
