Haas driver Kevin Magnussen sees no harm in having big ambitions and backs the ambitions delivered by Rich Energy chief William Storey during the Haas F1 Team's 2019 livery launch at London’s exclusive Royal Automobile Club.
Rich Energy will back the American team this season and during the function, Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean pulled back the covers on the gold and black car.
Speaking to reporters covering the event, Storey lobbed a barb to stir up an energy drinks war in Formula 1, “We are looking forward to taking on Red Bull, on and off the track.”
The 'challenge' is a tad ambitious and somewhat noob-like considering the gulf between the teams, but Magnussen saw no harm in the statement, "I think it's great to have big ambition."
"You hear William say he wants to take on Red Bull. He started a company that will be in direct competition outside of Formula 1 so you need to have this kind of ambition to succeed. There's nothing wrong with that at all."
Beating Red Bull will be a tough ask, hence no surprise the Dane played down the prospect, "I doubt it'll be this year, but no one knows what the future holds."
"There are regulation changes and maybe budget caps, so who knows what can happen? You can't say what's possible at the moment but if you don't believe in it, for sure it won't happen."
As for his own targets, the 26-year-old said, “That depends on what kind of car I get. Then when you see what kind of car you have you start to build some kind of goal for the season."
“That’s the frustrating thing about Formula 1: you can never just go into the season and say ‘I want to be the best this year’. I can say that but I can never prove it."
“I want to be the best and I feel like I can do that, but proving it is difficult in Formula 1 if you don’t have the best car,” added Magnussen who will compete in his 82nd Grand Prix when he lines up on the grid in Melbourne for the season opener on 17 March.
