Lewis Hamilton will start the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix from the front row of the grid and promises to take the fight to title rival Max Verstappen on Sunday.
The Red Bull driver has been at the very top of his game this season, apparently getting better with every outing and again today Verstappen and his Red Bull team have been better than Hamilton and Mercedes.
In fact, the Briton's teammate, Valtteri Bottas was quicker too but will drop three places on the grid for his FP2 pitlane spin infraction which promotes the #44 car to P2 on the grid.
Hamilton, who won this race last year, reported from the
Red Bull Ring on Saturday afternoon: "Well done to Max. They have been so fast this weekend. They've had two tenths on us through every session.
"I've been giving it absolutely everything but it just wasn't the greatest of qualifying sessions for me today. Nevertheless, it's still the front row after the penalty and we live to fight another day - we're there with the Red Bulls at the start so let's see what we can do, it makes for an exciting race.
"I'm proud of everyone's hard work, and for continuing to push, we're still in the fight and we've done a good job given the circumstances. I'm going to try and enjoy my evening, gather my thoughts and come back strong.
"We go into the race tomorrow for a fight," promised Hamilton who will be looking to claim his fourth win of this season and narrow the dozen points gap he has to Verstappen in the standings, ahead of Round 8. (Additional reporting by Agnes Carlier)
