Lewis Hamilton tried to manage expectations from Ferrari at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, as the Reds' SF-26 is tipped to go well around the tight streets of the principality.
The seven-time
Formula 1 Champion is wary of Mercedes, who have set the benchmark and best overall package so far in 2026 with their W17, but Ferrari's SF-26 has proven to be a nimble car, which is a prerequisite in Monaco despite being down on power, which isn't a requirement for this race.
Speaking to the media in Monaco on Thursday, Hamilton said: "On tracks with long straights, like Montreal, we've suffered a lot in terms of performance.
"Here, that should be less of an issue, and I don't think engine power will be such a determining factor. Our car handles well in slow corners, so I think we can be competitive.
"I'm not convinced we'll be the fastest car in the field. Mercedes, for example, seems competitive in all conditions and on every type of circuit.
"But I think we'll be in the mix," the 41-year-old Briton maintained.
Charles Leclerc,
who announced a multi-year Ferrari contract extension ahead of his home race, echoed his teammate's sentiments about his team's chances in Monaco and remains cautious, albeit optimistic.
"I think we are in a better place," Leclerc said. "I mean, if there's one track I would bet on us, it's probably Monaco.
"But I still believe that Mercedes have had a significant advantage since the beginning of the year, so I think they will be very strong.
"I think McLaren will be very strong, and Red Bull. But we have a strong package chassis-wise and aero-wise, so I think it could help us.
"But Mercedes, I think, remain the team to beat," the Monegasque who won at home in 2024 concluded. (Reporting by Agnes Carlier)
