Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc began self-flagellating himself from the moment he slammed the wall in Turn 8 during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix turning the probable joy of pole position into an early shower and disappointment.
The 21-year-old was quick to take the blame for the Q2 shunt and declare himself "very stupid" in the immediate aftermath of the crash that turned an afternoon of high hopes into more disappointment for the Italian team who are struggling to catch a break while their rivals Mercedes wipe the floor with them.
Needless to say, Leclerc was in pain long after the incident, “I am disappointed with myself. Our pace was good all weekend and we expected to have a positive qualifying result. My first lap in Q2 was very good considering we were on Mediums, but then I made a driving error on the second lap."
"I just didn’t do the job. The team and all the people supporting us out there deserved much more. Tomorrow is a new day. I will stay positive and push to do the best job possible in the race," insisted Leclerc who will start from 10th on the grid.
But prior to that, he refused to blame anyone but himself when he told reporters, "I deserved what happened today. Very sad for what happened, but I deserve it. I’ve been stupid as I said on the radio. I’ve calmed down but I still think I’ve been stupid – this doesn’t change."
"I will push to learn from this and come back stronger and hopefully have a very good race tomorrow. But yeah I deserve it. I don’t want to say anything stupid, but looking at FP1, FP2, FP3 and Quali 1, pole was possible today and I threw all the potential in the bin."
"I’m very disappointed and I’ll come back stronger from this," added Leclerc.
Big Question: Is Charles too hard on himself?
