Charles Leclerc was livid during the Singapore Grand Prix when, after controlling the race from pole-position, found himself in second place after the pitstops behind eventual race winner His Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel.
The German's side of the Red pitwall made an inspired call to pit their driver early, what transpired is now well documented. In a nutshell, he won a race after a year and a bit drought and made it three in a row for the Scuderia since the summer break.
Furthermore, on Sunday against expectations, Ferrari scored a one-two by soundly beating their rivals on the night, they turned a one-three finish, with Vettel's undercut pitstop into an unprecedented one-two at Marina Bay.
Leclerc fast reeled-in his anger and gave his team the benefit of the doubt. Now, Leclerc has gone a step further and backed his team's strategy call that so annoyed him, the Monegasque pacified after analysing the team's data after the race.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Russian Grand Prix weekend, he explained, “Analysing the race it was immediately apparent to me that what we did was the only strategy that could have given the team its one-two finish. And this, as we have said many times before, is the only thing that matters
As for the performance unleashed at the tricky street circuit that was not expected to suit SF90, the young Ferrari driver said, "In Singapore, the new aero package worked very well. I hope the whole team will do a good job again here to get the most out of the car.”
Vettel, in the sister car, was the big winner on the day and acknowledged, “I think the result was very nice for the whole team because the win came on a track that didn’t suit us on paper. For me obviously, after the race in Monza, it was very positive.
"Now we must concentrate on this race and on the coming ones, continuing to learn more about the car and our working methods. I think our aero package worked in the best possible way in Singapore, but we also did well in terms of our teamwork, working together right from the start of practice.
"The result of what we did on Friday and Saturday morning then became obvious in qualifying and the race, where we managed to get all the potential out of the car," added the four-time F1 World Champion.
