There’s no doubt that George Russell has been a steady presence for Mercedes. With Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari, Mercedes needed someone who would take the reins and compete consistently at the front, and Russell has done that.

It took a little time, of course. An almost calming presence that reinforces the team’s image and helps Mercedes build a more sustainable, performance-driven identity that resonates with fans and sponsors alike.
It’s not flashy. It’s not dramatic. But it’s exactly what the team needs to navigate their challenges and maintain credibility both on and off the circuits.
Not to mention, Russell is still in the prime of his career, and he believes he can win a championship with Mercedes. Having joined the team in 2022, he’s demonstrated a consistent performance, and with his mindset in the right place, there’s every chance he’s going to get better as he grows more familiar with the car and team dynamics.
This becomes even more important when you consider the new FIA regulations that will take effect in 2026 and beyond. Whether it’s Mercedes or Red Bull, teams are having to change the way they design, develop, and race their cars, and that means a technically-minded, focused driver is going to be crucial for steadying the ship as they learn and evolve.
There’s no doubt that Russell can be this person, potentially even being the perfect poster boy at the perfect time for the current landscape.
