Mercedes topped the timing screens at the end of day one of the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, with Valtteri Bottas three-thousandth of a second faster than teammate Lewis Hamilton in the afternoon session in which Nico Hulkenberg crashed his Renault.
Bottas' best lap of 1:08.846 was enough but only just, as his teammate, Hamilton was very close in the sister car as was Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari, third quickest and only seven-hundredths of a second shy of the top time.
Next up were the Red Bull pair headed by Daniel Ricciardo with the fourth best time, three tenths down on the top time and a tenth and a bit up on teammate Max Verstappen.
Kimi Raikkonen was sixth, half a second down on Vettel in the other red car.
Best of the Rest was again Romain Grosjean confirming that the Haas is a handy package around the 4.309 km Interlagos track. He was within a second of the benchmark time, and aa quarter of a second up on teammate Kevon Magnussen in ninth.
The Haas cars were split by the Sauber of Charles Leclerc in seventh on the timing screens at the end of the 90-minute session.
Esteban Ocon rounded out the top ten, with Force India teammate Sergio Perez slightly slower in 11th.
The session was stopped early on after Hulkenberg got wide going up the hill, over the kerbs and onto the grass he became a passenger as the Renault speared into the Armco, ripping the right front.
