Daniel Ricciardo gave Red Bull reason to smile after topping the timing screens at the end of the first free practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, on a slippery track that claimed a number victims.
Ricciardo's best time of 1:18.486 in the RB13, featuring a substantial upgrade, was almost a quarter of a second up on Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton was third fastest in the Mercedes three tenths down on Ricciardo, with Max Verstappen fourth in the other Red Bull half a second off his teammate's top time.
Valtteri Bottas was fifth fastest in the Mercedes, ahead of championship leader Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari. The German spun out on the half hour mark on the very 'green' track but with no damage.
Showing handy pace around the twisty confines of the Hungaroring were the McLaren duo of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne, ending the 90 minutes morning in seventh and eighth respectively. The rookie recovered after a spin early on in the session.
Next up were the Renault duo of Nico Hulkenberg in ninth and Jolyon Palmer rounding out the top ten. The Briton bringing practice to a premature end when he lost his front wing after an excursion over the kerbs in Turn 4. With little time left in the session and much debris lying on the track, the session was red flagged.
Romain Grosjean was again complaining about the brakes on his Haas, and also tagged the barriers with his rear wing when he spun out in Turn 11 shortly before the half hour mark. He was 16th on the timing sheets.
Antonio Giovinazzi, who has bent a few cars so far this year, was at it again in the Haas - in place of Kevin Magnussen - when he slammed the barrier at Turn 11 damaging the front left wheel. It was a short 8 lap session for the Ferrari reserve driver.
Alfonso Celis was on duty in the Force India in place of Esteban Ocon, the reserve driver was 17th and a second down on Sergio Perez in the sister car, who ended the session 12th fastest.
