Honda may be getting out of Formula 1, but that doesn't mean they are out of the motorsport business, with the Japanese manufacturer signing a multiyear extension with IndyCar on Saturday.
One of two companies supplying engines to the IndyCar grid alongside Chevrolet, both companies have now committed to a sport which will see its own shake-up in engine formula with the introduction of 2.4 litre, twin-turbocharged V6's with hybrid technology from the 2023 season onwards.
“To be able to announce a long-term, multi-year extension with our two great partners is phenomenal,” said IndyCar President Jay Frye. “It’s an exciting time in INDYCAR with the innovations in the car, the new 2.4-liter engine and hybrid technology.”
Ted Klaus, Honda North America's racing boss echoed Frye's sentiments.
“Honda welcomes this step to the future by INDYCAR, action that mirrors Honda’s efforts to develop and manufacture high-performance, electrified products that will meet industry challenges and delight our customers,” he said.
“At Honda, we race to develop our people, to innovate technologies and to engage fans. We are proud of our uninterrupted, 27-year leadership in INDYCAR, and look forward to delivering a next-generation Honda 2.4-liter hybrid power unit with more than 900 horsepower.”
Coming just a day after Honda pulled out of F1 citing a shift in its focus towards achieving carbon neutrality, the Japanese company ostensibly has no such concerns about its participation in the North American series, which Frye promises will continue to be "fast, loud, and authentic" while promoting continued innovation.
