The partnership between Max Verstappen and Red Bull has been nothing short of historic. The Dutch driver has spent his entire Formula 1 career within the Red Bull family, beginning at Toro Rosso before making his mark in Dietrich Mateschitz's senior team.
Since Verstappen's debut at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix with Red Bull's junior Toro Rosso team,
the results speak for themselves: four F1 world titles, 63 Grand Prix victories, and 112 podiums. A pivotal figure in this decision was Red Bull’s F1 consultant and head of its young driver development programme Dr Helmut Marko.
However, Verstappen’s career trajectory might have looked very different. Over a decade ago, when young Max was still competing in the junior categories, he and his father, Jos Verstappen, held discussions with Red Bull’s primary rival, Mercedes.
Ultimately, it was Red Bull’s assurance that they could fast-track Max into a Formula 1 car that swayed the Verstappen family to align with the Austrian team.
Marko, who holds considerable authority over the driver line-ups across Red Bull’s two teams, was instrumental in securing Verstappen’s future.
Speaking to Autosprint, Marko recounted his first encounter with the Dutchman during a Formula 3 race at the Norisring - a meeting he described as nothing short of cinematic.
Marko: The boy was already formidable, both with and without a helmet
"It was actually a very special conversation, almost like in a movie," Marko revealed. "I saw that he won in a great way and approached him with my very direct way. I looked him in the eye and said bluntly: 'Listen, Max, I just want to know one thing from you: do you race like this because you were forced to by the strict upbringing of your father, or do you have the intention and motivation to continue, regardless of who pushed you this far?'"
The response from the teenage Verstappen left a lasting impression on Marko: "Believe it or not, teenager Max Verstappen didn't make a sound, looked at me coldly and unmoved, and replied: 'No, I really enjoy racing. And it's completely my choice. My only concern is to continue as best I can and avoid the mistakes my father made.'
"To be honest, I was as surprised by that as I was by his driving on wet asphalt. The boy was already formidable, both with and without a helmet. He had a mature mentality in a boy's body. Much more mature than his age. Even now, he looks much further ahead than his age of 27. Since then, he has been a driver in our programme," stated Marko.
This defining moment not only secured Verstappen’s place within Red Bull’s ranks but also laid the foundation for one of Formula 1’s most successful partnerships.
This season marks Verstappen's 11th season in F1, his teammates at Red Bull have included Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alx Albon, and Sergio Perez with Liam Lawson his new teammate at RBR for 2025.
